We wasted $650 for a Criterium-McCafferty structural engineer to inspect our home. We hired Criterium for an independent inspection of our failing foundation that we are fighting the developer over. We needed this inspection to show current and potential damage that we sustained and will sustain. The engineer came out and during the inspection after finding out why we called, told me he also works for developers' warranty companies. He appeared disappointed that my fiance who scheduled the appointment wasn't home for the inspection, and that he had to deal with me who actually had the most information and history of the damage and what was going on with our house. He minimized the damage we sustained and minimized the amount of damage we would sustain within the next 6 months to year without even inspecting the basement floors, etc. For example, instead of telling me he needed the carpet pulled up so he could see the concrete slab, he wrote up a report stating he couldn't perform an in-depth inspection because it was a finished basement. But he went ahead and minimized the damage he could see and stated that there was no structural damage and only cosmetic damage would occur over the next six months to a year. Within a couple of months, we have cracks in the exposed concrete slab downstairs that explains cracks we have inside that were predictable and I already knew but he didn't care to listen, and we have cracks he blew off getting worse due to the shifting of our entire property that he tried to sell me as cosmetic only. I ended up knowing more than he did, and he blew me off and wrote a bogus report based on incompetence more than anything. We now have to hire someone else to come out and inspect our home. Hopefully the next "engineer" we hire will know more than little ole me and will be honest upfront about working for developers' warranty companies. And isn't that a conflict anyway, Criterium?? Yeah, we'll pass on that and Criterium too. I've already told my neighbors to be very careful with Criterium if they choose to go with them. My recommendation is a hard no on Criterium.
Working with them was a pleasure from start to finish. Matt was our structural engineer. He went above and beyond to make this work the way we needed and to keep it cost-efficient. We will definitely be back for any future needs and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for exceptional engineers at a reasonable price.
Melissa, Stuart and the crew are quick and provide excellent service! They know we work on deadlines in the mortgage business and easily help us get to the finish line. Give them a shot/it will be worth it!
