Second time using Rochester Hardwood Floor.
My home has the original narrow plank hardwoods. The floors are over 60 years old. Rochester Hardwood, literally has made them look brand new! Their work is consistently good. Two years ago, I had the floors on the main level refinished, and last month I had the 2nd floor floors refinished. I’m amazed at how well the floors turn out.
The only reason for not giving a perfect 5 star review: the shoe molding trim really takes a beating and in several areas there was polyurethane splashed up on my walls and trim.
Otherwise- couldn’t be happier with how beautiful the floors turned out.
Amazing crew of professionals. The floors at my house are over 150 years old, we also had to patch in several areas where the floor had to be removed for structural issues and lay new floor in the addition, BIG project.
Great communication, lots of patience and understanding and consistently asked question about what I wanted the floor to look like. Everyone was professional, friendly and reliable. Most importantly the floor looks incredible! It turned out much better than I imagined.
For reference we went with special walnut on red oak floors.
A couple of years ago, I refinished my steps and discover my entire second floor was also covered in top nail oak flooring under an old carpet.
I considered doing it myself - but knew it would take me forever considering the conditions of the wood (covered in paint due to the renovations of a previous owner).
After getting a few estimates - I went with Rochester Hardwood Floor. They came in last week and did an a awesome job sanding down the existing hardwood with some newer replacement slates I patched earlier. They match the stain I used for my steps, added 3 coats of polyurethane and finished with new quarter round molding over 4 days.
Highly recommended.
Job Cost: $4665
Job Hired For: Rochester Hardwood Floor Inc. was hired to sand and refinish all of my hardwood floors including my staircase, as well as install new quarter round trim in all but one room, and install variable and transition flooring strips connecting the hardwood floors to my kitchen, bathroom and entryway floors.
Overall Satisfaction: 80% happy with the end result.
Pros:
1) Rochester Hardwood Floors Inc. are 100% capable of achieving a high quality product.
2) Communication was great from start to finish.
3) All employees were friendly and willing to listen.
4) Once alerted to issues with the job I was called and heard.
Cons:
1) While Rochester Hardwood Floor Inc. is 100% capable of achieving a high quality product, attention to detail, rushing the job and careless mistakes hindered them from achieving this kind of product in my house.
2) While I understand and agree with their (not responsible for painted surfaces clause) I feel this issue was something that could have been avoided or minimized on my staircase. Staircase tread refinishing was rushed causing damage to the surrounding wood above the tread. Sanding disk sanded into the riser making a long 6" indentation grinding mark in the wood. After the painter came in to repaint the steps, the damage shows under the paint, which looks awful. If my steps were all finished wood and not painted would they have treated the job the same?
3) Poly clear coat and stain was leaking down the risers on several of the steps. This was left to dry. The next day another crew worked to correct the issue but only in a few spots. Issues still remain. When shown this issue, I was told that they didn't see any excessive issues with this workmanship.
4) Countless nails were not countersunk and filled through out the entire house causing several silver nail heads to show. As an example, 28 nail heads in a cluster right in front of the bathroom floor (a high profile area) were not counter sunk and filled. Also old screw holes never filled. Instead just stained and clear coated over. When brought to their attention the next day, the nails and holes were not fixed by the second crew and again clear coated over. When emailed to the final crew, these were fixed and received one coat of clear coat. After the job was completed there were still about 20 or so nail heads not countersunk or filled.
5) Three 2" holes were to be fixed during the job. Initially they were filled with wood putty and clear coated. These shrunk over night, cracked and sagged. The second crew was alerted to these and not fixed. Clear coated a second time. Emailed pics to the company, third crew put in new pieces of wood and fixed the issue. Not sure how many times these were clear coated, I know at least once on the final day when they were installed.
6) None of the trim nail holes on the quarter round were filled with putty. One small piece of trim was accidently left off. Crew came back the next day and installed the piece leaving the two nails used to hold the trim in place poking out of the trim. Not sure why this was left like this.
7) First crew used our bathroom leaving large poop streaks in our toilet. There is a brush to clean, maybe didn't see it or maybe didn't bother to be courteous.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, according to reviews this company does great work. In my experience this was not the case. I hired them to refinish all the floors in my house, willing to pay them whatever they charged. I was excited to have hired them in the beginning but by the end of the job was left disappointed, frustrated and wondering that if I had hired another company would I have had a better result.
I found the workmanship to be lacking in these areas.
1) No attention to detail.
2) Pride in workmanship just wasn't apparent.
3) Rushed work.
4) Careless mistakes.
Pictures show issues & overall view of floors which do look good from a distance. Again, I do believe Rochester Hardwood Floor Inc. has the skills to do great work but for some reason it just didn't happen in my house.
SUPER happy with Rochester Hardwood flooring. They came in to refinish our existing hardwoods in our dining room and hallway, and install new ones in the living room. They were extremely communicative and on time. They say they are dustless, and I couldn't agree more, SO CLEAN. They were able to match our existing wood floors with the new ones flawlessly. Ron and Brian were polite and friendly, hard workers and very professional. Would definitely use them again if we need it!
