Horrible experience with this company. They originally came out to clean our logs and charged us $700. We were told that we needed a new module for $284 on a set of logs that was only 2 years old. It took them 6 weeks to come back and replace this (only after I had to call to see when this would happen). The module was replaced then we were told that we needed a new valve. We waited another 6 weeks (only after I had to call them again to see when I could expect this). We then received a quote for another $652 to replace the valve. Obviously this tech has no clue or either they think we are just going to keep handing out hundreds of dollars to fix this new set of logs. Don’t waste your time with them unless you have deep pockets and don’t ask questions
Great job replacing my gas fireplace! Five stars for the company and technician, but two stars for the product they recommended.
I wish I had done a more thorough job of looking at logs instead of going with the first one that was strongly recommended by the technician, but I'll just assume that's on me. It's extremely fiddly, so I seem to need a tech coming out every year to get it working at the start of the season, which is super frustrating. I'm heading into my second winter with it, and it's the second time this has happened. Arghhhh. The product manual doesn't help much, and I don't like trying to DIY on anything gas related, so I gave up even trying to troubleshoot it once replacing the batteries and doing a reset to pair the remote didn't work. It sucks batteries dry annually on the remote control and the receiver (even though I only fired it up twice for very short periods each year, because it's too dang hot), then the receiver gets all messed up when the batteries die.
I expected something I could just fire up whenever, and it would reliably work, but that is not the case.
I wouldn't have spent the $2k to replace it, if I knew these issues going in. I either would've spent more to have fewer problems, or skipped replacing it.
But I don't know these issues are the fault of Advantage Gas, I think it's all about the product. They could perhaps have a deeper understanding of its limitations and issues before pushing it so hard, though, to help a homeowner make a more educated decision. It's like something designed in 1980 and never updated. For all I know, the entire "gas fireplace" industry could be like that, though, with no modernized products and this is completely typical. Or it could be on them that they aren't finding something better to recommend? I don't know. I've never had one before.
Also frustrating is that it runs so hot that I can't let it run for long at all, the house becomes a furnace in 15 minutes. It needs more options with the low temperatures, for sure. To just have the fireplace lit for ambiance is a fail, unless I have a freezing house with the furnace turned off. Anything else is a blast furnace. Turning off the heat, and turning on the fireplace is just too uncomfortably hot to enjoy.
Really nice people who care, though, and a great job on the installation and follow up service call! Their customer service is top notch. Just maybe do more due diligence than I did on an initial purchase, or ask a lot more questions. =)
Rita and I are very pleased with our new gas log installation in our fireplace. We couldn’t have selected a better company to work with. Brandon did a fantastic job. He replaced our old faulty gas line with a new one and was very conscious of his cleanliness by using tarps both inside and out. His original estimate was right on. The final bill was very close considering the adjustment due to the unanticipated faulty gas line. I thought it would be higher. We will recommend your firm (and Brandon) highly.
