I had a Chevy 250 I6 rebuilt and they've done a good job, so far so good at 5000 miles post rebuild. The engine runs great, huge improvement from how it was before. They pulled my engine and rebuilt it for a very fair price, half the price of anywhere else I called, most of which couldn't even pull the engine.
I took the car back for the 1000 miles oil change and they fixed an exhaust leak and rear mean seal leak under warranty, but they did crank my oil filter on like crazy, I had to buy a tool to get it off.
I took the car back for a knocking sound and black smoke, which I thought was related. The black smoke was just my carburetor which I've fixed now, and the knock was lifter bleed down which is common these engines, the mechanic told me to run 20w50 and it should go away after a few oil changes, he seems to be correct on this from my own research. They also replaced a lifter which was sticking, all under warranty.
My main complaint is small, they put gasket sealer on all my cork gaskets which is unnecessary and will be a pain when I need to replace them. I had to replace my valve cover gasket after the last job they did because it was leaking quite bad, didn't bother taking it back for something so small, but there was gasket sealer everywhere and I had to scrape it off along with chunks of the old gasket.
Overall these guys do good work for a fair price, and they honor their warranty. only complains are typical of having someone else work on your car.
HORRIBLE experience with IG Diego.
Full rebuild from them lasted less than 30k miles in under 2yrs on my Toyota Pickup. Their warranty only covers 18 months with no option to extend said warranty.
I was having a bad misfire after the rebuild and took it to them for diagnostic.
They claimed I was using “bad gas” that caused the failure. I only get gas from Sam’s Club or Chevron, so I knew this was a lie. So after nearly $4000 spent at IG Diego, they said it would cost me another $2500 to repair the motor they rebuilt.
I had another shop remove the heads to find the actual cause of failure. IG Diego apparently used the cheapest no-name pistons and rings which had failed in 2 cylinders (pictured).
The shop also found that a recent coolant leak came from a hose on the block that IG Diego had claimed to have changed at an additional charge, which I paid.
I thought I was hiring a competent shop that specialized in motor rebuilds, but they use the cheapest components they can find and blame the customer when they fail.
There were even more issues prior to the misfire such as, leaks, false diagnosis, food/drink left in my vehicle after repair, and surprise charges and conditions that were not told upfront.
Don’t make the same mistake I did and stay away from this shop…
EDIT:
This is in response to IG Diego’s claims concerning my review.
1. If the parts were quality, they would not have failed unless installed carelessly or improperly. Case closed. Your builds integrity has been proven weak.
2. If you stand by your work, you would offer an extended warranty for an extra fee. If your work was truly quality, then it sounds like a complete win for you financially as well as a win for the consumer as money well spent. I asked if I could pay more to have a longer warranty and my request was declined.
3. I took the vehicle to 2 AAA approved shops and both confirmed that the possibility of fuel causing this engine failure was not likely even if bad fuel was used. Both concluded the cause was likeliness of poor craftsmanship or defective parts, but could only be proven by disassembly of the heads. So “naturally” 2 consistent professional opinions will reveal the dishonesty of the 3rd.
4. The photos provided show the failing pistons that you in your own words deemed “reliable”. If they were, you would have responded with the exact part numbers and photos to prove they were not no name parts.
Also if the coolant pooled up next to the “new” hose they “replaced” in photo 3 of 7 doesn’t prove their dishonesty, I don’t know what will.
I already spoke with Diego directly after their diagnostic and was told nothing could be done on the price even though they could provide no proof of the “bad fuel” cause of failure.
When the initial rebuild was completed, I asked what is the life expectancy of the motor? They said “It should outlive you, it’s a Toyota” with a smile on their face. They may claim that this quote is a lie, but I guess that’s one thing I’m glad they were wrong about.
Because I’m still kickin’, but their motor sure ain’t.
In early February 2025, my wife and I found IG Diego Engine & Trans. Inc when we were looking for a place to have the engine of our 2006 GMC Yukon rebuilt. Gabriel and Diego were very helpful on deciding what kind of service our truck needed. We were quoted a price before the engine removal and inspection, but when the mechanics disassembled the engine, they discovered more damage to other internal parts. IG Diego gave us a new estimate and, even though it was a lot more than what we were thinking, we decided to get the job done with them. We liked the fact that they were really clear about the price of the new parts, including the engine block and the labor charges. In just two days, they completely rebuilt the engine and had it running like new. We have had our Yukon since 2008 and we were excited to know that it will continue running, with a brand new engine, for many more years. We ended up paying $6,270, but it was worth it!
Update: On June 12, 2025, almost 5,000 miles more since our GMC Yukon was fixed, we went back to IG Diego to get the suspension control arms and ball joints replaced. After 18 years on the road, these parts needed to be replaced, too. Once again, we were very satisfied with the work IG Diego did. We are looking forward to take our Yukon to IG Diego in the future for any mechanical issues.
I.G Diego shop was great, reliable, and trustworthy, they replaced a head and fixed massive misfire on my 91 Silverado, runs great, I would recommend this shop to anyone with mechanical issues
Shoutout from Bakersfield,CA
IG Diego Engine and transmission are my go to for engine service. I have a 2003 Celica with a built 1ZZ, Three years ago I purchased a “professionally built 1ZZ engine from a company called MonkeyWrench Racing”. They promised that the motor would run great, instead the engine leaked, issues with misfire and oil consumption. I looked around for a great engine builder and IG Diego was that. They corrected the issues I had with the previous motor while strengthening it at the same time. The pricing was better and reasonable than shipping my motor back to the MWR for them to “fix it”.
