We contacted Shly Deck & Fence after seeing several completed projects in our neighborhood. While the finished work looked excellent, our experience with the sales process raised serious concerns.
We initially worked with a salesperson named Robert and received an initial quote of $5,878. While the price was appealing, the estimate contained multiple errors and unclear fees, including listing the project as a deck instead of a fence, showing two different permit fees ($250 and $500), and including additional charges in the fine print without explanation. The quote also excluded approximately 15 feet of our backyard. While our property has an easement, fencing is permitted there, and the proposed layout was awkward and wasted yard space. We asked Robert for a revised quote covering the full yard.
During this process, Robert became pushy, repeatedly pressuring us to sign a contract despite unresolved issues. This combination of errors, omissions, and pressure raised concerns that the scope and pricing could change after signing.
When we requested clarification and corrections, Robert abruptly stated that Shly would be “passing on the project,” which was shocking. We were just asking for clarification and wanted to make sure we were being informed customers.
I then contacted the company and spoke with James, the General Manager, who was professional, transparent, and provided a revised quote of $7,494.
However, after raising concerns with management, we then received another quote from Robert for nearly $11,000, despite being told the company would not proceed. The timing and size of this increase, combined with prior pressure to sign, made us feel we were being forced into a contract that could become significantly more expensive.
After receiving three vastly different quotes, I emailed the owner directly to share my concerns and never received a response.
While we appreciated James’s professionalism, the overall experience raised concerns about sales conduct, pricing consistency, and oversight. Based on this experience, we chose not to move forward and are submitting this complaint to help prevent similar issues for future customers.
Edited- after reading the response from the owner I’m going to add that I tried to contact the owner privately before completing a public review. I never heard back. Also, if they are shocked by the behavior of their salesman I would be happy to share texts where he is extremely pushy and unprofessional.
