Curry was very friendly and knowledgeable about fireplaces. I called to inquire about my blower assembly and he gave me some stellar advice that ultimately fixed my problem without the costly service call. I'll be using Curry and his team to help with all my other fireplace needs like annual chimney cleaning since I know I have a trusted partner with Topcat Chimney!
Update: LICENSE EXPIRED!!!
Not licensed to do work in El Paso county anymore never had a license for Pueblo or Teller or any other county either.
Avoid at all cost DEADLY workmanship!!!
Curren “Curry” Cast is a horrible, dangerous, dishonest business owner. As a part of the purchase agreement of our home the seller selected Topcat Chimney service to install a wood burning insert. Curren quoted for a wood burning insert and the instillation was done before closing. While the quote was for a true fireplace insert, a free standing wood stove was “installed” into the brick fireplace. This in itself is not safe as they require to be installed in an open space. The bottom of the unit was removed and it was placed on the air intake. The first time we attempted to use it the air flow control lever broke off. I contacted Curren, and he assured me we did not need the airflow control. This is false air flow control is important for fire control. He then proceeded to lead me on and miss multiple appointments made around his schedule on three occasions. The day he finally made it to an appointment, after getting in touch with the contractor who selected him for work, he came and looked at things, claimed to be just a worker bee, had no answers for the bait and switch, and no answers for the fact he is unlicensed in our county. His license for El Paso county is now locked as well. Besides being the wrong insert, there were many flaws in the instillation, bent and stripped screws, all the screws were only hand tight, there were major gaps in all the connections for the chimney, damage was done to the surround for the fireplace. This work was downright dangerous. If we used this fireplace we would have either burned our house down or died of carbon monoxide it wasn’t even a sealed connection for the chimney. Do not trust this company to do quality work, fix their mistakes, or have any accountability for the safety of their customers. Every other fireplace company we talked to knew of his hack work and are fixing his jobs where he’s ripped off customers. Currens work will kill someone.
Curry was awesome! He showed up promptly for the appointment window and was extremely upfront with pricing. He gave exact estimates and did not pressure me as a customer.
He was able to troubleshoot the problem with my chimney and correct the work that was not done right by a previous chimney sweep company (A1 Chimney). He was extremely professional and I will be going to him from now on for any issues that arise with my fireplace.
Absolutely ZERO stars!!!! This guy is unprofessional and steals hard-earned money from his customers!
I HAVE REACHED OUT TO CURRY DIRECTLY TO DISCUSS A RESOLUTION PRIOR TO SUBMITTING THIS INFORMATION TO THE BBB AND HERE ON GOOGLE BUT CURRY ACCUSED ME OF TRYING TO RIPP HIM OFF WHEN CURRY IS THE ONE THAT TOOK $4500 (LABOR COST) FOR SUCH AN UNPROFESSIONAL JOB! $4500, YES: $4500! THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY AND I HAD TO FIX IT WITH ANOTHER COMPANY! AND HAD TO SPEND A COUPLE THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE TO BUY THE WHOLE CHIMNEY PIPE SYSTEM AGAIN IN DOUBLE WALL!!! THIS IS A TRUE EVENT, AND IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME WE HAVE CAMERA FOOTAGE! JUST ASK ME! I WILL BE PROCEEDING WITH THIS SINCE WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED BY THE SMOKE IN THE HOUSE HE HAS CAUSED BY BEING NEGLEG
Date of service started on April 9th 2024. We paid Curry with Topcat Chimney out of Colorado Springs, CO a total of $4500 labor only, and then another $3700 for all materials necessary for Curry to complete the job (paid to Cripple Creek hardware store and Western fireplace supply in Colorado Springs). Curry committed to fixing our main 6" fireplace chimney, the one that Curry deemed unsafe in his service call performed that day, and to installing another 6" stove pipe set-up in the addition for another wood stove including a pellet stove pipe set-up for a separate pellet stove downstairs. So when Curry first checked out the piping through the ceiling in the main house, he discovered an issue with the stove pipe connection at the ceiling box attachment. Then Curry suggested that box and the triple wall chimney pipe attached to that ceiling box to be replaced by him. Curry and his employee cleaned out the fireplace then disassembled the doublewall stove pipe within the house. Then replaced the ceiling box by removing the old box with adjusting opening, and installing a new box with added shingles around it. Then Curry and his employee started re-attaching the double wall chimney pipe inside the house. Curry standing on the ladder, the top pipe assembly came apart and falling down damaging our windows frame (luckily didn't cause other property damage or hurting his employee). Then Curry replaced that damaged stove pipe assembly with single wall stove pipe only, eventhough the stove manufacturer suggests double wall stove pipe. Then he installed everything with poor craftsmanship (pictures available). Curry used silver sheet metal screws only, no slip-joint, the 6" elbow in the addition just fell off one day, the pellet stove pipe had insufficient support, screws in the driveway causing a flat tire and unsealed chimney flashing on the roof including missing storm collar. Text messages support attempts to resolve everything. Curry promised to do a good job BUT failed to do so! A different contractor had to fix both chimney pipe runs before winter because my wife and I depend on that wood stove heating source! It has been definitely disappointing and discouraging! Why when we pay that much money can't we have a decent product??? We are not rich. I myself am a regular employee and work hard for that money! $2420 refund requested since I had to spend that again on top of Curry's charges to fix everything including the damages! but Curry denied that. Of course he did! Be aware! I did contact the BBB to get help on this. Next step would be small-claims court. I have honestly tried to reason with this guy but unsuccessful!
Update 02-17-2025:
Our chimney pipe started smoking through the roof box a week ago. Then a day later it was even worse! I was sooo upset. So I actually (being afraid of heights) threw a rope across the roof, tight it onto the ATV and climbed up the roof!!! All to find (see new photos) that Curry took the spark arrestor screen and rolled it up three times and put it inside the chimney cap (yes, inside the 6-inch diameter space)! So that screen was super full of soot and blocked off the exit way for the smoke! REALLY?! Why would someone do that purposely??? I cannot even comprehend!
Update 10-19-2025:
HAD to replace ALL of the pellet stove pipe!!! I'm pissed!!!
We had some concerns about our chimney being loose on the roof and possibly needing some reinforcement before a roof replacement.
On the phone Curry was upfront about the expected cost depending on what his inspection found. He came by for the inspection today on time, offered some education and a few tips, but ultimately was reassuring that the chimney was stable and we'd be good to go. Found Curry to be honest and very personable, with no high pressure sales like the big companies. Just a good guy operating his small company, offering an honest service while doing something he enjoys for his community. Thanks Curry!
