I recently purchased an apartment in
Manhattan that I have been renovating for the past month. When it came to refinishing my floors, I wanted desperately to change the color, but my contractor said he does not want to take the risk of sanding and restating them bc they are engineered hardwood with a very thin veneer and he thought there is no way they could strip off the top coat without eating into the ply beneath which would completely destroy the floors. I did a little research and found that most flooring people will not touch a floor with at least 3mm of veneer and my floors had exactly 2mm. I was a bit nervous, but decided to go for it and I couldn’t be happier. My floor looks absolutely perfect and brand new. Even the deep scratches and dents are gone and the stain color is just gorgeous. For reference, the species of wood is Sapele and the stain color is Ebony with extra matte Bona HD traffic.
